An Electrifying Start to the Baltic Congress of Radiology 2024!

The Baltic Congress of Radiology (BCR) 2024 kicked off with a dynamic first day, setting the stage for a weekend of cutting-edge discoveries, innovative sessions, and in-depth discussions.

Morning Sessions: Setting the Tone

The day began with a focus on polytrauma imaging, emergency radiology, and post-mortem CT angiography, presented by Matīss Breikšs, Arturas Samuilis, and Sünne Remmer. These sessions explored crucial protocols and advanced imaging techniques for trauma cases and emergency settings, providing attendees with actionable insights.

Simultaneously, the pediatric radiology session captivated the audience with talks on pediatric musculoskeletal and abdominal emergencies by Natālija Merkla and Ilze Apine, helping radiologists better navigate complex night shifts and challenging cases.

Spotlight on Artificial Intelligence

AI was a hot topic of the day, with sessions dedicated to its growing impact in radiology. Elena Sügis discussed the implementation of AI in healthcare, while Curtis P. Langlotz from the RSNA delivered a visionary talk on the future of AI in radiology. Experts such as Andris Veiss and Karlis Kupcs showcased an AI-based tool for acute ischemic stroke detection in non-enhanced CT scans, underscoring the transformative power of AI in diagnostics.

Afternoon Insights: Oncology and Screening

In the afternoon, the spotlight shifted to oncology imaging and cancer screening. Attendees were treated to sessions on PSMA PET-CT by Marika Kalnina, emphasizing its application in prostate cancer. A powerful panel discussion on lung cancer screening featured perspectives from Juergen Biederer, Elizabete Kadakovska, and Pilvi Ilves, who shared experiences from Latvia, Estonia, and Germany.

For those interested in breast imaging, the day featured engaging talks on screening women with dense breasts, AI in breast imaging, and the challenges of breast cancer screening across the Baltics, with input from Prof. Ruud Pijnappel, Maria Adele Marino, and others.

Closing the Day with Advanced Imaging Techniques

The final sessions of the day explored advanced MRI techniques, dementia diagnosis, and MRI’s role in understanding neuroinflammation and depression, led by Juhan Reimand, Simonas Jesmanas, and Jasmina Boban. These talks left participants with a deeper understanding of how imaging can play a crucial role in both diagnostic and therapeutic avenues.

A Day to Remember

As the first day of BCR 2024 came to a close, it was clear that the congress had already delivered invaluable insights and learning opportunities. From trauma imaging and AI breakthroughs to oncology and neuroimaging, the diversity of topics ensured that every attendee found something to inspire and inform their practice.
